Biz Spotlight Art is Passion for Mother-Daughter Duo HM tracked down a very passionate duet whose love for art and family make them an unstoppable pair. Meet Ruth and Caryn Landauer, mother and daughter team living in Houston, who have a unique opportunity to work together on projects they love. Both are abstract artists. They love to paint. This has been a very exciting year for this mother-daughter team. After many years of selling their work to both private and corporate buyers, they now have opened their studio for the first time for open houses and private showings to the public. Art – A Family Affair Art has been part of the family’s life since Caryn can remember. Now in her early 40’s, many of her earliest memories are of art- related activities, whether drawing, creating or writing. Growing up in New York, the family’s first joint venture was a “book” written and illustrated by Caryn at the age of seven with the help of her younger brother, Ken, who was five. It told the tale of the mischievous activities of their Sheltie puppy. Both kids’ artwork dating from early childhood shows a wonderful array of subject matter and creativity. This was an important part of family life. Their mother, Ruth, who is in her 60’s now, says the arts have always been central to her life, whether it was attending the opera or the ballet, doing needle work, taking art lessons or painting on her own. Her twin sister is a Boston watercolor artist and son, Ken, an artist located in New York. In addition, for many years, Ruth has been the Volunteer Director at Houston Hospice. The artist duo, Ruth and Caryn, enjoy painting and, especially, enjoy painting together. Each learns from the other. They both laugh at the picture they paint after a day in the studio when it seems there is more paint on them than on the canvas. Their business venture came about naturally. They each have a full time job. For the past eight years, Caryn has managed the showroom for an art consultant company. Since she knows many people in the arts and knows of all the art events in Houston, promoting their work comes easily to her. Ruth is more than happy to leave this aspect of their business to Caryn. The other person who plays an important role in this project is husband and father, Bob, who is always supportive, sometimes questioning, always practical and endlessly proud of both of them. Mothers and daughters often share many interests, but few are fortunate enough to be involved in a business together. Ruth and Caryn admit they sometimes disagree, but with respect for each other and a sense of humor, they continue to build a business that brings challenges, lots of work and joy to both of them.
