New Trends! From High Point, North Caroline Furniture Market
By Elaine Dorcheus,
President Color, pattern and texture were all in the spotlight at the April ’08 Home Furnishings Market in High Point, NC. Pattern was particularly important since it marks a shift from past solids and textures that have dominated. These distinctive textures have set the stage for a return to more complex patterns both large and small. Small scale motifs as all-over designs are part of the trend. Patchworks of mini flowers seem to be ushering in a new interpretation of country that has been absent for a couple of decades. Bold blocks of color create a contemporary take on pattern. Another trend that has been gaining momentum is the use of metallic finishes on everything from furniture to fabrics. In addition to the usual metallic tones such as gold and platinum, colored metallics are also emerging in tones of red, turquoise, pinks and purples. Similarly, fabrics woven from Lurex yarns were also seen in upholstery and textile lines. The Lurex gives fabrics a more subtle interpretation of metallic when combined with the usual non-metallic fibers. Increasing demand for eco-friendly “green” products has caused a wave of socially conscious manufacturers to emerge on the scene. Sustainably harvested wood, fabrics and materials have been integrated into many furniture lines in order to responsibly meet this demand. And they have managed to do it stylishly without sacrificing aesthetics. Cisco Brothers, a California-based upholstery manufacturer, is even using soy fiber to replace the traditional polyester wrap inside seat cushions and all of the newly-introduced fabrics are made from sustainable, renewable sources. This concern for planet and culture, paired with ultimate cushioned seating and high style set the stage for a company poised for success. As one of the fastest-growing plants on the planet, bamboo is the ultimate renewable resource in the natural fibers market. And it is amazingly soft, light weight and highly absorbent making it the perfect choice for home textiles. It is also inherently pest and pathogen-free so it can be grown without fertilizer or pesticides. Market would not be complete without appearances from a celebrity or two. And who else but Martha Stewart in person to address an audience eager to learn her secrets for success in the Home Furnishings Industry. In a discussion led by Designer Stephen Sills, audience members were invited to ask questions and participate. Questions ranged from, “What vitamins do you take?!” to “What is the source of your inspiration for your home furnishing products?” Of course Martha responded to all questions with poise and charm that made us understand how she has earned her place as “Decorating Diva”.
